PODCASTS

In 2003 I left my Portland based home of over thirty years to move to a city that I had no prior desire to visit, let alone live in--Los Angeles, California! I was raised in the country and although Portland is a nice sized city, it is small compared to the congestion, smog and freeways of L.A.!
My intent in moving to L.A. revolved around the work I had developed with my enterprenurial business, Creative Insights. Exactly what this meant, I wasn't sure. Looking back now, how sane was it to leave my friends, family and clients to go to a BIG city to do--what I wasn't sure!
Answering an ad for an audition for a radio producer position, I immediately panicked. L.A. is the radio capital of the United States as more people are apparently in cars than anywhere else. I had no experience in radio, had not gone to radio school and did not even know how to set up a microphone!
My first hurdle was navigating the three freeways between me and the radio
station. I left four hours before my appointment, got lost and arrived one hour before the audition.
What do you imagine when you think of being auditioned in Hollywood? Well, all I could do to quiet my nerves was to tell myself "make it an adventure, Gloria!" And that is what I did. I was one of about 35 other "young" just out of radio school individuals auditioning for five spots.
Little did I know that this was actually the easy part. I was called and offered the producer position which meant that I was going to be producing my own one half hour radio show with commercials. I reported to the station the next week.
Arriving at ARN, American Radio Network, I was told empathically that this was a radio station, not a school. I was directed to a broadcasting room, seated and told to set up and the station director would be back in ten minutes. What all this meant I wasn't sure.
In front of me were many dials, knobs and switches, cd player on both sides and a microphone in front of me. I am dyslexic and what this meant for me in a radio station is that coordinating my head with my hands and eyes was going to be a challenge.
The station director entered the room, sat next to me and said, "okay, we are on. When I start the timer, you start speaking." I said, "oh, if I make a mistake, can I start over?" "Absolutely not" he said.
This was the longest one half hour show I ever lived through. I was supposed to speak, watch his frantic hand signals as to what to do next, read one commercial and play the other two pre-recorded commercials on cue....his cue!
The station director sat in with me for three shows while I DJ'd and then I was on my own. The first show I did a tribute to Barry White, one of my favorite singers. The second show I did a tribute to another favorite of mine, Kenny G. Then I learned that Barry White died the very week I did my tribute to him. No more tributes
I decided.
I produced my radio show "Heart-Mind Conversations" for about a year. I would like to continue broadcasting similar information about how our heart-mind conversations become airborne with our thoughts, emotions and intentions.
My plan is to begin podcasting in September, 2008.
Enjoy listening and evolving.
