Moving into observer position is one of the most self-empowering positions a person can do for themselves. And here's why:
- Keeps you in the present moment instead of dwelling on the past or future.
- Keeps you in your power.
- Allows you to see beyond appearances so you have more information to work with and enabling you to more accurately access what is occurring.
- Allows you to respond from choice rather than react from impulse.
- Allows you to learn about yourself without your filters interfering (your triggers, defenses, judgments, beliefs, protections and intentions) as well as others and/or a situation.
- Keeps you focused on a solution instead of on the problem.
- Keeps you from becoming defensive and shutting down.
- Keeps you from becoming enmeshed or entangled in a situation.
- Raises your level of consciousness bringing more Light into the situation and you.
Seeing, noticing or watching for the purpose of learning without judgment or criticism while maintaining a neutral position.
Maintaining a neutral position is not easy. It requires that an individual be able to do the following:
- Approach with a desire and intent to learn and rise above a situation or issue.
- Be on their own side.
- Feel secure within themselves.
- Feel safe within themselves.
- Set aside any inclinations to want to blame, accuse, judge, criticize, stonewall, control or manipulate in any way.
- Have functioning boundaries.
- Trusts themselves to listen to their intuition and instincts.
- Be able to center within themselves.
- Stay open to new ideas and viewpoints about themselves and others and/or the situation.
- Detach from the outcome.
Moving into observer position can be done when one is reflecting on a situation or actively involved in an interaction. When we use it when we are reflecting on a situation it can provide missing pieces of the puzzle to our understanding of what occurred. It’s like rewinding a tape and watching it from the sidelines, enabling us to see more of the whole picture.
When we move into observer position when we are interacting with another person or situation, it may be a little more difficult to do if our emotions have been aroused but we can do it. And it is to our advantage to move into observer position because it can prevent hurt feelings on every one’s part as well as valuable information about ourselves and others—motives, intentions, subconscious beliefs and fears. Sometimes the only way we are able to ‘see’ the energies we are exchanging with others is by being in observer position. Otherwise our defenses and filters interfere with our perceptions and interpretations.
For instance, if we had a parent who used the ‘contempt’ energy when he or she interacted with us, we will tend to use this energy when interacting with others without realizing it. As a child we mimic the energies we see our parents using even if we dislike them or even disagree with them and then they become second nature to us and we forget as an adult that we have choice regarding the energies we exchange with others. No one teaches us to reassess our energy exchanges with others.
Moving into observer position does not make sense mentally because we seem to be doing the impossible but in the energy domain the rules of movement are different. In the energy world we can step outside of ourselves without leaving ourself. So when we move into observer position we move into a position of neutrality within ourselves. The key factors is our intention and desire to do this. When we move into this position we cannot take with us judgment, blame or any dynamic other than love, compassion and acceptance. Remember that ‘acceptance’ equals ‘reality’. Acceptance does not mean that you condone, like or agree with what is occurring.
If a parent can move into observer position when listening to their child or a husband/wife move into observer position when there is a misunderstanding or they feel threatened, the extra insights and information available can make a big difference in how the interaction turns out.
When we move into observer position, we are able to listen much deeper, understand things we thought we could never could understand and evolve our consciousness beyond prejudices and the past.
The above energy schematic will show your subconscious mind how to begin moving into the position of observer within yourself. Practice in a situation where you are centered and grounded and are not stressed. It may feel strange at first. Enjoy the benefits.
